Dosoo, a banking icon goes home

A former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mr Lionel Van Lare  Dosoo, is dead.

Mr Dosoo, who was an independent non-executive member of the Board of the Ecobank Ghana Limited since 2010, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2015, just two days after he chaired the annual general meeting (AGM) of the ECOBANK, which incidentally happened to be his last public appearance.

A statement issued by his family said his funeral arrangement would be announced later. 

He was also the chairman of the Governance and Risk Management committees of Ecobank and served under two Governors of the central bank — 

Dr Kwabena Duffour and Dr Paul  Acquah, from May 2000 to September 2009.

Mr Dosoo also worked with Mr  Asiedu-Mante from May 29, 2001 to May 31, 2006 and Dr Mahamadu Bawumia from June 1, 2006 to January 23, 2009 as Co-Deputy Governors during his tenure.

Work as BoG Deputy Governor 

As a Deputy Governor during the period, he served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee(MPC). During his tenure, Mr Dosoo, with a background in operations, was instrumental in the many monetary policy reforms that took place at the central bank, including the redenomination of the cedi and the e-Zwich payment platform. 

He was the Head of  Planning, Logistics and Implementation Committee of the Ghana Cedi redenomination exercise (2007), Member and Representative of Bank of Ghana on the Revenue Agencies Governing Board (became Chairman from 2005 to 2008), and Member of the Committee on the Design and Implementation of the E-Zwich Platform for financial Institutions. 

Recently when President John Dramani Mahama set up a task force to work on the establishment of  Ghana Exim Bank, it was chaired by Mr Dosoo.

Subsequently he became the Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Exim Bank from February 2015.

Mr Dosoo was also a board member of the newly created Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund.

For 25 years in the USA and before relocating to Ghana in 2000, Mr Dosoo worked for various prestigious United States financial Institutions, including Pacific Bank, Los Angeles (CITI National Bank), where he was Vice-President, as well as  the Banque indosues, Los Angeles (Credit Angricole), Wells Fargo Bank (Los Angeles ) and Chase Manhanttan Bank, New York.

His work experience in the USA included developing and managing new businesses, structuring and consulting for mostly Fortune 1000 corporations in the Petroleum, Aerospace, Engineering, Construction and Entertainment Industries worldwide. 

Mr Dosoo was a product of Tsiame Ghana School (Roman Catholic/ Local Authority), Ho Bankoe Roman Catholic School and Achimota School (1965).

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the New York University (Stern School) in 1982.
