Building design technicians given deadline to register

The Registrar of the Architects Registration Council (ARC) of Ghana, Mrs Stella N.D. Arthiabah, has cautioned building design technicians, technologists and draughtsmen operating without licence to obtain one before the September 2017 deadline.

She said it would be an offence for draughtsmen, technologists and design technicians in the construction industry to operate without a licence.

“We are calling on all building design technicians, technologists and draughtsmen without licences to contact the ARC office in Accra for registration guidelines.

Mrs Arthiabah made the call at an introductory workshop in Ho, the Volta regional capital, to register and categorise building design technicians, technologists & draughtsmen in the country towards licensure.

The workshop was organised by the National Board of Control for Building Design Technicians & Draughtsmen under the auspices of the ARC and the Ministry of Works and Housing.

It formed part of a road show being organised to sensitise the building design technicians to an ongoing exercise to register and categorise them towards licensure. The first one was held in Accra and then in Cape Coast. The team is expected to visit Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale as well.

Mrs Arthiabah noted that building technicians played a significant role in the development of every nation; adding that a single error on their part could create serious problems that might be difficult to correct.

She explained that the formation of the National Board of Control for Building Design Technicians & Draughtsmen was as a result of the government’s response to the call by key industry players such as the Association of Building Technicians (ABT) and the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) to develop professionalism in the building and construction industry by extending an arm of regulation over the technicians in the industry.

“With the help of the Ministry of Works and Housing, the board has been set up with the aim of ensuring professionalism in the delivery of technical services within the built environment professions, and the creation of a safe and sustainable built environment for all,” she said.

Mrs Arthiabah urged participants to be ambassadors of change and gave the assurance, on behalf of the board, to create an enabling environment for the building technicians in the country to do well.

The lead facilitator of the workshop was Mr Robert Fraikue, the Principal Assistant Registrar of ARC, who took participants through areas such as the need to be registered and licensed, requirements and the process for registration, categorisation of members based on educational standing and experience, and finally the continuous educational curricular.

The Public Relations Officer of the Association of Building Technicians (ABT) Ghana, Mr George Baffour Kyei Amoah, expressed optimism that the ongoing registration process would bring sanity in the industry, and as such urged building design technicians, especially members of ABT, to take the entire registration process serious and get registered.
