Ghana in the Premier League

There have been some fantastic players from Ghana in the English Premier League over the years. Football fans have been lucky to watch Tony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Richard Kingson and Sulley Muntari in action during the Premier League era.

The first player to appear in the Premier League from Ghana was Nil Lamptey. He played for Aston Villa in 1994 and since then we have seen 24 other players from Ghana in the Premier League.

Of those currently playing in the competition, Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace could be about to set a new record in the Premier League. As things stand, Ayew is the joint leading goal scorer from Ghana in Premier League history, joining Yeboah on 24 goals. Ayew has 8 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, which is a personal best and he is sure to go on and break Yeboah’s record, which would be a fine achievement.

Speaking of Ayew, compatriot Lamptey said, “If he gets the opportunity to join any of the top-notch teams in the English Premier League, I bet you the whole world will see the quality he is made of.” Ayew was previously linked with a move to Liverpool in 2018 and while the transfer to Anfield may be out of the question now, a move to a top six Premier League club is not.

Two other Ghana internationals currently playing in the Premier League have a title winners medal to their name. Jeffrey Schlupp and Daniel Amartey were part of the Leicester City squad when they shocked the world to win the 2015/16 title. Amartey is still with the Foxes while Schlupp has left to link up with Ayew at Selhurst Park.

Game time has been limited for Amartey this season and it is believed he is about to leave Leicester City. Back in January, Amartey was linked to several clubs including Fulham, Sheffield United and Newcastle United. However, a move did not materialise and Amartey will have to wait until the end of the 2019/20 campaign before getting a transfer. Turkish Super Lig side Goztepe are believed to be one of the clubs leading the way for his signature.

Schlupp left Leicester City to join Crystal Palace for a fee of just over £12 million in January 2017. The winger has gone on to play over 90 times for the Eagles, including 30 Premier League appearances in the 2018/19 campaign. Schlupp has featured on the left side of midfield but has also operated successfully in the centre of midfield during his time at Crystal Palace. In a recent discussion among Palace fans on Twitter, Schlupp was highly praised and many commented on how he was the most improved player in the Crystal Palace team during the 2019/20 season.

Another left sided player currently operating in the Premier League is Christian Atsu. The Ghana international joined Chelsea in 2013 but never made a competitive appearance for the club, going out on loan many times including at Everton and Newcastle United. Having impressed during his loan spell at the latter, Atsu made the move permanent in May 2017, signing for £6.2 million.

Atsu has played over 70 times for the Magpies and played a role in their return to the Premier League in 2017. Having won 65 caps for Ghana, Atsu is a key member of the international set-up and played and was a key player for Newcastle United as they finished 10th in the 2017/18 Premier League season.
