Mr Vanderpuije noted that it will be appropriate for government to invest into areas of sports that can win medals for the country just as other countries do.

There have been a lot of debate over Ghana’s inability to make an impact at the just-ended Rio Olympic Games, with many blaming government for failing to prepare athletes adequately for the global event.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Aspire Football Dreams launch in Accra last Tuesday, Mr Vanderpuye said, “we are ready to target our sports for Tokyo 2020 so we can invest and achieve something for the nation”.

“This will enable us concentrate on specific disciplines that we believe can win us medals, so that if for instance if we can’t make waves in football, we will get rid of it,” he added.

“It will be in the best interest of the nation to invest into swimming if it can yield us medals,” the minister stressed.

Vanderpuye revealed that he had put in place a yet-to-be-inaugurated committee to be known as “Project 2020”, with Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare as chairman to look into which disciplines would be the best to that effect.

He, however, pledged government’s support for all the disciplines that participated in the just-ended Rio Games.
