Abrefa shows class at Edo State Open

National ping-pong top seed, Derek Abrefa, last Saturday emerged winner of the Edo State Open Championship held in Edo State, Nigeria.

The Ghanaian also took the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the three-day competition which saw him beating the topmost players in the State.

Abrefa, 24, an employee of Ghana Immigration Service, defeated the highest ranked player of Edo State, Ogieva Oriakhi, 3-1 in the final to lift the ultimate prize of a trophy and a medal.

Earlier, the 13th best African player had defeated Ogusa Osaigbovo 3-1, thrashed Daniel Obioma 3-0, and won 3-2 against Edo State top seed Osarenth Iguma to progress to the semi-finals.

The ace spinner then beat Nankan Farda 3-0 in the semi-final in a keenly-contested match.

Abrefa told the Daily Graphic in an interview later that he was dedicating the trophy to the executives of Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) and those who made it possible for him to participate in the tournament.

He said he intended to embark on more training programmes in China in February to sharpen his skills.

Abrefa was sponsored by ASKY Airlines, Mawuko Afadzinu, president of the GTTA, and his vice, Engineer Kenneth Ashigbey who is the, Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited.
