Bonsu to reclaim title at Azumah Nelson Fight Night

Redemption will be the main motivation for hard-hitting Abraham Osei Bonsu when he attempts to reclaim the national super-featherweight title from undefeated champion Joshua Wahab Oluwaseun tomorrow at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Bonsu (10wins-1loss-1 draw) was controversially stripped of the title last year after he was unable to make a mandatory defence during the stipulated period.

His opponent, Oluwaseun then claimed the vacant strap months later on June 11, 2016 after a tko stoppage of Michael Pappoe at the second edition of the ‘Azumah Nelson Fight Night’ held  at the Kempinski Hotel.

Nine months later Bonsu is still coming to terms with the loss and he told the Graphic Sports ahead of his headline bout with Oluwaseun that he still regards himself as a national champion and will make it official with a win tomorrow.

"Everyone knows I am a champion, I lost that title through no fault of mine but thanks to Azumah Nelson and Hemann Promotions I have the opportunity to redeem myself," Bonsu told the Graphic Sports last Tuesday in an interview on the sidelines of a press conference.

He added, "It was painful to lose the national title that way, but thankfully my destiny is now in my hands and trust me Joshua will fall on Saturday".

The national super-featherweight champion, Oluwaseun, in response to Bonsu's prediction said he was in the best shape of his life and poised to defend the title for the fourth time.

"Everybody knows me, my fight record speaks for itself and when it comes to fighting in front of my mentor Azumah Nelson I have already done it twice in the past," Oluwaseun who was born to a Nigerian father in Ghana said.

"I want to keep improving because my main target is a world title. My fans should rest assured I will make them proud on Saturday".

Aside the Bonsu-Oluwaseum clash, there will be five other encounters, the pick of which is an international amateur contest which pits baby-faced Lebanese brawler, Elias Farah and Ghanaian middleweight champion Musa Rahman Lawson.

Also on the undercard is a vacant national super-bantamwight title bout involving Isaac Sackey (17 wins-0 losses-1draw) and Karamudeen Boyefioo (10 wins-0 losses-0 draws), while Stephen Abbey (13 wins-13 losses-0 draws) will battle Emmanuel Martey (10 wins- 0 losses- 0 draws) for the national super-middleweight title.

In other bouts, Michael Pappoe (17 wins- 4 losses-0 draws) will lock horns with Isaac Dowuona (6 wins-1 loss-0 draws) for the super-featherweight title and Uganda's Selemani Saidi will battle Obodai Sai in a non-title middleweight encounter.
