Two political commentators who allegedly threatened the lives of judges of the superior court are in hot waters, as the Supreme Court yesterday summoned them to appear before it.

Apart from the two, the court also summoned the owner of Muntie FM, where the alleged comments were made, and the host of the programme on which the comments were made.

“The persons to be summoned are the owner of Muntie FM, the host of the programme by name Salifu Mase, alias Mugabe, and the panellists, Alistair Tairo Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn,” the court, presided over by the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood, ordered.

The apex court gave the orders before ruling on an application for clarification of a judgement on the voters register delivered on May 5, 2016.

Attention

In what was described by the court as its pronouncement on the alleged comments, the Chief Justice explained that the court had acted accordingly after it became aware of the alleged comments.

“The attention of the Supreme Court had been drawn to a radio programme allegedly aired on Muntie FM on June 29, 2016 in which two panellists ran commentary on this application for clarification on the issue currently before the court.

“The panellists, allegedly spurred on by the host of the programme, are alleged to have scandalised and threatened this court in a manner, if proven, would amount to contempt of the court,’’ the Chief Justice said.

‘Come and defend yourself’

Mrs Justice Wood explained that the four individuals must appear before the court and explain their alleged actions.

“They have been summoned before this court per a warrant to show cause why they should not be punished for contempt if the alleged matters are proven against them to the satisfaction of this court,’’ she said.

BNI custody

The two panellists were questioned by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) when they turned themselves in at the offices of the bureau on July 3, 2016.

Nelson, a BNI source said, described himself as a former member of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), while Gunn simply told the BNI he was a resident of La, Accra.
