Performance programme for public workers next year

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will work with organised labour next year to introduce a performance enhancing programme to challenge public sector workers to increase productivity.

That move, he said, was crucial because although the Single Spine Pay Policy called for equity in remuneration, reward system and productivity, the emphasis now was on remuneration and reward system, to the neglect of productivity.

President Mahama made this known yesterday at the end-of-year get-together for staff of the Presidency at the Castle Gardens, Osu in Accra.

Present at the party were the Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur; the Chief of Staff, Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, and the Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr Roger Angsomwine.

Productivity

President Mahama noted that workers were talking about salary increases and reward packages without any mention of productivity.

He said the performance-enhancing programme would, therefore, make workers give of their best.

Advice

President Mahama tasked staff at the Presidency to lead the way in the execution of government business.

He said while the Presidency was demanding ministers of state and chief executives to meet the targets set in their respective performance contracts, staff of the Presidency must peer review themselves.

He said the staff had done well in terms of providing administrative support for the Presidency, but indicated that there was room for improvement.

He said the government would complete expansion work at the Flagstaff House soon to absorb the remaining staff at the Castle.

President Mahama said the government would make the economy more diversified in the coming years and fulfil his election promises.

Mr Bani said 2013 had been eventful, as it ushered in the first term of President Mahama's administration and the movement of the seat of government from the Castle to the Flagstaff House.

He said many of the Presidency staff had benefited from capacity development programmes supported by the Canadian government.
