The recipients are required to implement the one-year project through civil society engagements and advocacy programmes.

An agreement to facilitate the projects was signed between Star-Ghana and the 45 organisations in Accra yesterday.

Six organisations signed on behalf of the 45 beneficiaries. They are the Multimedia Group Limited, the Community Development Alliance, the Voice of People with Disability in Ghana (VOICE), the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), the Centre for Public Interest Law (CEPIL) and the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA).

Thirty of the 45 organisations received $3 million under the democratic governance project, while the remaining 15 received $1.5 million under the access to justice project.

VOICE Ghana, the Multimedia Group and ACEP signed on behalf of the democratic governance partners, while AWLA, the Community Development Alliance and CEPIL signed on behalf of the partners in the access to justice project.

Projects

Under the democratic governance project, partners are expected to strengthen democratic governance through advocacy, sensitisation and engagement programmes, with focus on the vulnerable in society.

The access to justice project aims at improving access to justice for all members of the public through civil society engagements with independent government institutions.

Objectives of projects

In his address, the Programme Manager of Star-Ghana, Mr Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu, said the aim of the democratic governance project was to provide a platform for citizens, particularly the vulnerable, to engage in governance issues.

He said the project was also to enhance decentralised governance, ensure electoral reforms and engage citizens in ensuring government accountability at the national level.

Mr Amidu said citizens would be educated on legal matters and processes to empower them to know their rights, as well as strengthen and improve access to legal schemes.

He urged the organisations to make efficient use of the resources given to them to support the quest to increase citizen influence in the country.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Multimedia Group Limited, Mr Klaus Von Buckstein, thanked Star-Ghana for the gesture.

He promised that the funds would be used for the intended purposes.

The partners who supported Star Ghana with the grant are DANIDA, the European Union, USAID and UKaid.
