Nii Lante urges fathers to be responsible

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuije, has urged fathers to live exemplary lives that would be worthy of emulation by the younger generation.

He said if fathers failed in their responsibilities to the family, the children were likely to be wayward, since they would look for other ways to satisfy their needs.

“The moral decadence and social vices that the society is bedevilled with today can be linked to men who have failed to play their fatherly roles and responsibilities. This is because children do not have the opportunity to imbibe good values from their parents,” he said.

Father’s Day

Mr Vanderpuije was speaking to the congregation of the World Harvest Church in Accra last Sunday to mark Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year across the world to eulogise men for the great role they play in maintaining their families and holding society together.

On such occasions, goodwill messages are sent to men and shared on social media to demonstrate the great role they play.

It is also a period to remind men that they have a responsibility to provide basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter for the family.

Fathers must be responsible

Mr Vanderpuije observed that real men were those who took good care of the family and taught their children the values and norms of the society such that they did not deviate from those values.

He said education was one of the best legacies responsible fathers could bestow on their children to make them responsible in the future.

“Attitude also plays a very important role in the life of people. God places much value on the attitude of people; so fathers who are the head of the family ought to teach their children to develop the right attitude,” he added.

He said it was important for men to be truthful and transparent to their wives in all aspects of life so as to earn the trust of the family, which he said was the ideal way to consolidate family bond and solidarity.

Uphold Christian virtues

The General Overseer of the church, Rev. Anthony Acheampong, urged the congregation to uphold Christian virtues such as love, trustworthiness and honesty because, according to him, those values were in tune with God’s commandment.

Rev. Acheampong said it was a divine duty for fathers to be the God symbol for the family by providing physical protection and support for all the members.

He distributed Bibles and other Christian literature to the youth and urged them to desist from acts that contravened the will of God.
