Most Rev. Gabriel Kumordji appointed new Bishop of Keta-Akatsi

Pope Francis has appointed Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji as the new Bishop of the Keta-Akatsi Diocese in the Volta Region. Until his appointment, the 61-year-old bishop was the apostolic vicar of Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region. He takes over from Most Rev. Anthony K. Adanuty, who retired in 2016 after attaining 75 years.

He was ordained priest by Most Rev. Dominic Andoh, the then Archbishop of Accra on July 14, 1985, at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.

Bishop Kumordji started his priestly formation at age 20 in 1976 at the St Victor’s Major Seminary in Tamale in the Northern Region doing philosophy studies.

He is expected to be installed before June this year.      

Education

Announcing the new appointment in Accra, which was also done simultaneously in the Keta-Akatsi Diocese and Rome, the Secretary General of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Very Rev. Father Lazarus Anondee, said Bishop Kumordji joined the novitiate of the Society of Divine Word (SVD) in 1979 and professed the first vows of priesthood on September 8, 1980.

From 1980 to 1983, he did his theological studies at the same Major Seminary in Tamale.

 After one year of pastoral experience in the Diocese of Sunyani he took his final vow on September 8, 1984 at Sacred Heart Parish in Accra.

Career

From there Bishop Kumordji served as an Assistant Parish Priest from 1985 to 1989 at the St Augustine Parish at Asesewa in the Eastern Region.

He also pastored the St Maria Goretti Parish at Bator in the Volta Region from 1989 to 1991 before he went to study at the Loyola University in Chicago in the United States from 1991 to 1993 where he obtained Masters in Pastoral Studies and Postgraduate Certificate in Religious Formation from the St Louis University in Missouri.

On his return in 1993, he was appointed the Director of Formation for SVD Students and lectured in Pastoral Theology, Homiletic, Pastoral Counselling and Missiology at St Victor’s Major Seminary from 1993 to 2001.

He again studied in Los Angeles from 2001 to 2005 where he acquired Master’s degree and PhD in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadema in California in the United States.

On June 22, 2005, Bishop Kumordji was elected and appointed the Provincial Superior of the SVD. He was also elected the President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious Men in Ghana.

 

He was appointed Apostolic Prefect of Donkorkrom on June 12, 2007. When the Prefecture of Donkorkrom was elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate, he was appointed the first Apostolic Vicar.
