‘Recruit professionals in pre-tertiary schools’

The Registrar of the Ho Technical University, Dr Christopher K. Amehoe, has called for the restructuring of the educational system and introduction of new concepts to enhance the professional development of teachers at the pre-tertiary levels of education.

Dr Amehoe made the suggestion when he addressed the 5th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Manya Krobo Municipal chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) as the guest speaker.

The conference took place at the Kpong Ensign College of Public Health in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

It was on the theme: ‘’Transforming Society through Education towards Agenda 2030: The roles of Stakeholders.’’

Dr Amehoe said to transform societies, it was pertinent for stakeholders in education to ensure that only professional teachers were recruited to teach at the pre-tertiary level in order to promote efficiency and effective teaching and learning.

“Adopting modern ways of teaching and providing appropriate and adequate teaching and learning materials on time, together with teachers who are professionals, will deliver the kind of educational transformation the country desires,” he stated.

He said improving the conditions of service of trained teachers in the public service would reduce the rate at which professional teachers left the teaching service for more lucrative jobs and also ensure that the transformation agenda was carried out.

Dr Amehoe advised parents, who are key stakeholders, to assist teachers by instilling in their children high moral standards and comportment and also participating in school activities and consulting teachers on the performance of their children.

He stated that even though the sole aim of any union was to seek the welfare of its members, however, for the purpose of achieving the agenda 2030, the GNAT must do more than seek only for the well-being of its members.

‘’Negotiate for compulsory government sponsorship, continuous professional development and ensure that multi-grade teaching, especially in rural areas, are abolished,’’ he emphasised.

Earlier, the Manya Krobo Municipal Secretary of GNAT, Mr John Gomey, said all stakeholders in education should play their expected roles so that in unity they could raise the standards of education in the country to appreciable levels.
