Kumasi business district empty on voting day

The usual bustling in the central business district of Kumasi at Kejetia and Adum was absent on Wednesday because most people were casting their ballot to elect a President and members of Parliament.

Most shops did not open, while hawkers who normally occupy half of the road making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to flow freely were not around.

Just a skeletal few plying their trade and some buyers were hanging around.

A walk through the principal streets by the Graphic Online team indicated that although some areas within the commercial enclave had polling stations, there were no queues at these centres.

The few traders who were able to make it to the commercial centre were not experiencing brisk business.

Usually on holidays, such as March 6, commercial activities move on in Kumasi as though nothing had happened in the country, unlike Accra where on holiday’s commercial activities at the central business district come to a standstill.

Speaking to the Graphic Online, Richard Bonsu, a mobile phone dealer said he registered at Adum close to Ecobank and was able to vote at the centre and arrange his things to make some sales.

Mrs Rebecca Agyemfra had travelled from Bibiani to Kumasi to buy some hair products but was disappointed that the three shops she usually buy from did not open.
