KATH junior doctors call off strike

Junior doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have called off an indefinite strike action started last Tuesday, after the government released money to settle their nine months salary arrears.

The CEO of KATH, Dr Joseph Akpaloo, returned from Accra yesterday afternoon with a bulk cheque which enabled the hospital to issue the striking doctors with individual cheques.

The president of the House Officers, Dr. Michael Boateng, told the Daily Graphic “we have called off the strike because we all have our cheques in our hands.

“With this, each and everyone of us is reporting for work tomorrow. Indeed, those who are supposed to be on duty will have to start work immediately,” Dr Boateng said.

The House officers withdrew their services last Tuesday to demand the payment of their salaries which had been in arrears for nine months.

Some of the doctors locked their consulting rooms and refused to attend to the patients and not even the wailing of some pregnant women could force them to rescind their decision.

The hardest hit was the obstetrics and gynecology unit of the hospital.
