Graphic vendors meet MD

Vendors of newspapers in the stable of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) in the Eastern and Volta regions have paid a courtesy call on the Managing Director of the company, Mr Ken Ashigbey, in his office in Accra.

The vendors were accompanied by the Zonal and Business Manager of the GCGL for the Eastern and Volta regions, Mrs Catherine Ablorh. The meeting discussed challenges and other concerns the vendors faced in the course of selling the newspapers.

The vendors expressed worry over low sales of the newspapers in recent months. They blamed the phenomenon, however, on the poor reading habit of  Ghanaians and over-reliance on the review of newspapers on radio and television by the public.

The vendors also raised concerns over their retirement package, education of their children and health benefits for themselves and their families.

In response, Mr Ashigbey urged the vendors not to feel discouraged but endeavour to put in more effort in their work. He urged them to see themselves as part of the ‘Graphic family’ and as such had an interest to see the company succeed.

He said the company was interested in the welfare of its vendors and as such had instituted plans to have them registered with the NHIS.

He advised vendors who were above 60 years to consider retiring and encouraged the young ones among them to contribute to the SSNIT pension scheme in order to safeguard  their future during retirement. He cautioned them to be wary of the schemes they chose to contribute to so they did not fall prey to fraudsters.

He reminded them to also take advantage of the scholarship scheme put in place by the company for the children of both staff and vendors.  He said even though the date for submission of application forms for scholarship was near, the company would consider to extend the date so that vendors could also apply.

Present at the meeting were the Director of Marketing, Ms Shirley Aquaah-Harrison; the Acting Sales and Circulation Manager, Mr Martin Omari Sarfo, the Market Research Manager, Ms Adwoa Oforiwa Turkson, and some staff members of the company.

The vendors used the occasion to go on a tour of the company.
