GCGL to partner GhIE to promote national development
The President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), Ing. Ben Richard Aniagyei, has called for collaboration between the GhIE and the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) to assist in educating the general public on the role engineers play in the development of the country.

He also called for a collaboration with the GCGL to discuss topical issues confronting the country and solicit ways and means to solve the problems to improve the living standard of the people.
Ing. Aniagyei made the call when a five-member delegation from the GhIE paid a courtesy call on the Managing Director of the GCGL and the Editor of the Daily Graphic in Accra.
This call came in the wake of recent reports of the collapse of the Melcom building which many had attributed to the lack of proper supervision and use of sub-standard building materials.
Week celebration
Ing. Aniagyei noted that the engineering week celebration that would commence on March 26, 2014 would give engineers the opportunity to educate and inform the public and other concerned authorities about their contribution to national development.
He said the one-week celebration was on the theme: “Providing sustainable solutions for improved quality of life: The role of engineers”.
The theme for the celebration aims at giving the public the solution to problems to improve upon their quality of life through the help of the engineers.
Collaboration
According to him, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the GCGL and the GhIE to discuss issues that will be of benefit to the two companies.
He explained that during the discussion to promote the work of the GhIE, the GCGL decided to assign some journalists to the institute to help promote the role of engineers across the country.
Ing. Aniagyei stated that with the cooperation of the GCGL, the living standard of the people in the country would be improved.
Training centre for journalists
The Chief Executive Officer of Delin Consult, an institution of planners, engineers and quality surveyors, Ing. Magnus Lincoln Quarshie, suggested that a training centre should be established to train some journalists in engineering.
He said issues to be discussed would include matters affecting the public transportation sector and electrical facilities in buildings.
This initiative, he said, would equip and help journalists to report and come out with solutions that would help solve the infrastructural and electrical problems confronting the country.
He said personnel from the engineering field would be employed to interact and educate the journalists and interested participants in the country.
GCGL response
The Managing Director of the GCGL, Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, assured the GhIE of the GCGL’s readiness to assist in promoting its programmes and contribute to the development of the country.
He re-assured the GhIE that the company would assign journalists to adequately cover their programmes for the benefit of the society.
“By March, a team of journalists would be selected to meet and decide the way forward on how to disseminate information on activities of the GhIE for the benefit of society,” Ing. Ashigbey said.
Ing. Ashigbey, who is also an engineer, urged the GhIE to peer review all developed structures adding that such activities would project their role effectively as engineers in the country.
He entreated engineering institutions to stand up, support each other and fight for the right of engineers.
The Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh, supported the suggestion to assist in the provision of adequate coverage of issues such as helping to promote effective waste management and steps to end the negative effect of galamsey in the country.

He said the initiative would be taken seriously and the general public would also be informed about happenings in the country.
