The GH¢4.9-million building complex is equipped with facilities that provide a conducive atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.

The GCB Bank Limited provided both a grant and a concessionary loan to finance the project.

The construction of the complex was initiated at the time the bank was celebrating its Golden Jubilee.

The initial plan for the building was reviewed and expanded to accommodate more students, considering the growing student population and the strategic direction and development of the university.

Academia and industry

The acting Managing Director of GCB Bank, Mr Samuel Sarpong, attributed the successful completion of the project to the strong and long-standing bond between the university and the bank.

“The building is a vivid demonstration of fruitful collaboration between academia and industry,” he indicated.

Mr Sarpong paid glowing tribute to past managing directors of the bank, particularly from 2003, for their foresight which had led to the execution of the project.

He disclosed that an agency of the bank that provided digital banking services would be established in the building for the convenience of the university community.

He pointed out that the project formed part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility to the university as it strived to improve education in the country.

According to him, GCB had spent about GH¢10 million on its corporate social responsibility programmes over the past four years.

Examination periods

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, said the new facility would help facilitate the writing of examinations in the university.

According to him, the university’s examination periods, which, lasted for three weeks, would now be reduced to two weeks.

“The facility will also make it possible for the university to host more international programmes and conferences,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor commended GCB for its tremendous support to the university over the years and described the building as a beautiful edifice.
