Supported by members of the Loss Control Unit of the ECG, in one such episode the female staff, led by Ms Rosemond Asamoah Frimpong, the National President of the Power Queens Club, visited houses in Kaneshie, Swanlake and Fadama in Accra last Friday.

Sixty out of the 150 customers whose meters were inspected were found to have engaged in illegal connections and had consumed power to the tune of GH¢120,000.

The affected customers had their electricity supply disconnected and  were surcharged with the power had consumed.

Illegal acts

In one house at Swanlake, all the four meters in use had been tampered with, resulting in the illegal use of power.

At a car washing bay, it was realised that all the connections to the meter had been by-passed, for which reason  power consumption was not being recorded.

It was also discovered that power meant for use in residential premises was being used in commercial facilities to avoid the payment of the appropriate tariff.

Resolve

Ms Frimpong told the Daily Graphic that the club had resolved to support the company to deal with illegal connections, since that was a drain on the company.

“We sometimes undertake revenue mobilisation exercises but today we decided to clamp down on illegal connections,” she said, adding that “in the course of the exercises, we also educate consumers on the judicious use of power to cut down on their bills.

She said people who engaged in illegal connections were found out when their present consumption pattern was checked against their history of consumption in the company’s system.

Ms Frimpong urged the public to report people who engaged in illegal connections and indicated that there was a financial reward for doing so.
