They allegedly sold the cars after respraying them.

One of their accomplices, Mohammed Abdulai, a 31-year-old businessman, who is said to have bought the stolen vehicles, is also in police custody.

Car for sale

Briefing journalists, the Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Paul Ayittey, said on November 12, one of the suspects, later identified as Kyei, contacted a car dealer who had displayed for sale a Hyundai Elantra salon vehicle with a DV number plate for sale, and expressed interest in it.

Mr Ayittey said Kyei and the car dealer agreed to meet so Kyei could inspect the vehicle.

However, Kyei is said to have lured the victim to a mechanic shop at the Nungua Barrier, claiming he wanted to seek a second opinion about the condition of the vehicle.

Mr Ayittey said at the mechanic shop, two young men, dressed like mechanics, collected the ignition keys from the owner, on the pretext of test driving the car, but bolted with it.

He said the victim, sensing danger after the two young men had sped off with his car, raised an alarm which attracted some residents, leading to the arrest of Kyei.

When Kyei was handed over to the police, he allegedly admitted the offence during interrogation and led the police to arrest the other suspects later.

Mr Ayittey said police had since retrieved three vehicles from the suspects and urged people whose car had been snatched to contact the police to assist in investigations.
