Anglogold drills boreholes for Creeky, Asare Bediako SHS

Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine (AGA) has drilled two mechanised boreholes with overhead water tanks for Creeky, a suburb of Obuasi, and the Asare Bediako Senior High School (SHS) at Akrokerri, both in the Adansi North District in the Ashanti Region to ease difficulties they have with getting access to potable water.

The project took AGA four months to complete at a cost of GH¢84,489 with funding from the AGA’s Community Trust Fund. The borehole facility for Creeky cost GH¢41,197.50 and that of the Asare Bediako SHS cost GH¢43,291.50.

About 1,500 residents of Creeky are expected to benefit from the water project, while approximately 1,200 students are expected to be beneficiaries of the school project.

The projects were constructed in conformity with the corporate social  responsibility of the AGA for communities within the mine’s area of operations.

In separate interviews following the inauguration of the facilities at Akrokerri and Obuasi, the Vice-President for Sustainability of AGA Obuasi Mine, Nana Ampofo Bekoe, said it became necessary to embark on the two projects after a needs assessment of the two entities.

He said AGA was committed to complementing the government’s efforts to improve the living conditions of the people in the country, especially in the areas of health, education and sanitation.

He noted that the facilities would help solve the water problems the students and residents faced.

A Board Member of AGA’s Community Trust Fund, Nana Opoku Ababio, who is also the Bekwai Adontenhene, charged the beneficiaries to maintain the facilities  to ensure their longer lifespan.

Gratitude

The District Director of Education for Adansi North, Mr Paul Antwi Oppong, on behalf of the Ghana Education Service (GES), expressed gratitude to AGA for the gesture.

At Creeky, the Obuasi Municipal Engineer, Mr Stephen Tecku, and the Assembly Member for Creeky Electoral Area, Mr Emmanuel Arthur, urged the Water and Sanitation Committee to ensure that the boreholes were maintained properly to prevent them from deteriorating prematurely.

The committee was further urged to work closely with the district assembly for assistance in maintaining the facilities.
