St Paul’s old students give back to alma mater

Members of the 1991 year group of the St Paul’s Senior High School (SPASCO) have held a homecoming durbar at the school, during which they donated some computers and exercise books worth GH¢75,000 to their alma mater at Hatsukorpe, near Denu, in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region.

The 25 desktop computers and 1,000 exercise books were presented to commemorate 25 years of completing the school.

At the durbar at the school at the weekend, the President of the 1991 year group, Mr Bernard Selasi Dzormeku, said the donation, which was supported by Kasapreko Company Limited, was to facilitate effective teaching and learning of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the school.

He indicated that as old students, they had an obligation towards the growth and development of their alma mater and urged all old students to join in repositioning SPACO among the crème de la crème’ of second cycle institutions in the country.

Commendation and advice to students

The old students also commended the authorities for restoring discipline in the school following the unfortunate February 5, 2015 riot, which resulted in the death of one student.

They, therefore, advised the students to be disciplined and invest their time and energy into their studies in order to make themselves and the school proud at the end of their academic pursuits.

The Member of Parliament for Ketu South and Minister of Transport, Mr Fifi Kwetey, who graced the occasion, entreated the students to take inspiration from the old students and work hard to attain their aspirations in life.

He encouraged them to make good use of technology to enhance their studies instead of using it on nefarious activities.

Mr Kwetey commended the SPACO ‘91 group for giving back to their alma mater, and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for both students and teachers at all levels of education.

Appeal

The Headmaster of St Paul’s SHS, Mr Francis Hlorgbe, expressed gratitude to the old students for their support and urged other year groups to emulate their example.

He drew attention to the need to carry out major renovation works on some classrooms and dormitory blocks in the school and appealed to stakeholders and other benevolent organisations to assist the 58-year-old school in that regard.

The Board Chairman of the school, Mr David Nutakor, for his part, used the opportunity to appeal to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to expedite action on the investigative committee’s report on the February 5, 2015 riot so that appropriate compensations could be paid to those who were affected by the incident.
