Release funds to complete projects - DCE appeals to GETFund

The Gomoa West District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, has appealed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to release funds for the completion of two abandoned dormitories at the Gomoa Senior High Technical School (GSTS) at Gomoa Dawurampong in the Central Region.

He said when completed, the projects, dormitories for boys and girls, would help end the accommodation challenges confronting the school.

According to him, the school, in the absence of the dormitories, was faced with a herculean task of accommodating the growing student population.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah made the appeal when he presented seven packets of roofing sheets to the school to support the roofing of its girls’ dormitory that was razed by fire last year.

Fire outbreak

The dormitory was destroyed on October 2, 2013 after it was razed by fire, destroying items worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

The situation led to the closure of the school for some weeks after the Deputy Central Regional Minister and MP for Agona East, Mrs Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, paid a visit to the school to assess the extent of damage.

In the absence of a dormitory to accommodate the affected students, the school authorities were compelled to convert some classrooms into dormitories to house the students. The measure resulted in congestion since the classrooms could not accommodate the huge number of students.

The students were, therefore, forced to pack their trunks, chop boxes and other personal items on the veranda since such items could not be kept in the rooms due to lack of space.

Presentation

Making the presentation, Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the items were to facilitate the completion of work on the dormitory blocks.

He added that the school recently organised a fundraising programme in aid of the project, after which the assembly liaised with the Ghana Cement Company (GHACEM), which donated 200 bags of cement towards the project.

He assured the school authorities of the assembly’s support towards the speedy completion of the project before the beginning of the academic year in September.

Appreciation

The Assistant Headmistress in charge of administration of the school, Mrs Perpetual P.  Amegashie, who received the items, thanked the assembly for the support, stressing that the project needed to be completed before school reopened.

She assured the assembly that the building would quickly be roofed to pave way for other works to be done.
