107 Doctors graduate from School of Medical Sciences

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of the College of Health Sciences - of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) - has held its 21st oath-swearing ceremony for 107 newly trained doctors in Kumasi.

The new doctors were made up of 55 men and 52 women.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof William Otoo Ellis, said as a science and technology university, KNUST would continue to play its part through the training of the required human resource, in support of national development, and also make significant contributions to the nation’s growth, through research outputs and extension services and support to other health-related institutions.

He said the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), established in 1975, originally to train physicians, medical scientists and medical laboratory technologists, had over the years expanded its operations and was now involved in the training of postgraduate doctors.

Prof Ellis said in addition, the college was running a six-year Doctor of Veterinary Medical (DVM) programme, to provide the needed human resource to address issues relating to animal health and welfare, food security, public health, among others.

He said the college had the potential to expand and, therefore, called on the government and other partners in the educational sector to support its development programmes.

The Kamenahene, Nana Osae Nyanpong VI, who was the guest speaker, called on the government to improve on the conditions of service of doctors, and also urged the doctors to work hard to enhance the provision of quality health care.

Dr Akaho Elikplim Horga was adjudged the overall best doctor, after receiving eight awards out of a total of 14.
