A former Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr S. K. Obeng, has urged the government  and other stakeholders in the education sector to collaborate in providing schools with the needed resources to enhance quality education.

He said in addition to the services of qualified and well-motivated teachers who would give of their best, the needed infrastructure and inputs in the form of texbooks, chalk and teaching materials should be supplied readily to the schools.

Mr Obeng stated this at the 70th anniversary ceremony of the Odumase Unity Methodist Basic School at Odumase.

The school, which used to be called Odumase Middle School, was established in January 25, 1944 to guarantee residents of the community access to quality education.

Mr Obeng said there was an urgent  need to pay attention to the basic schools which served as the foundation of meaningful education, stressing that any building with a weak foundation could collapse when the superstructure was erected.

Mr Obeng expressed regret at the under-funding and under-staffing in some schools in the rural areas, and urged the government to address the problem. He also called for intensive supervision of schools to keep teachers on their toes to ensure that they gave of their best, irrespective of where they may find themselves teaching.

The Chief of Odumase, Nana Kofi Antwi II, in an address read for him, appealed to parents to invest in their children’s education by providing them with their needs.

In an address read on his behalf, the Municipal Chief Executive for Konongo, Alhaji Braimah Boyong, pledged his support for the development of education in the area by providing the needed infrastructure to facilitate teaching and learning.

He appealed to parents to monitor what their children watched on television at home and also ensure that they studied hard.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Obeng Adjei, appealed to the assembly to, as a matter of urgency, renovate the school which was built over 70 years ago, since the buildings, which have not seen any repair works, posed a serious danger to both teachers and pupils.
