‘Pool resources to revive Science Museum’

The Executive Director of the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board (GMMB), Dr Zagba Narh Oyortey, has called for a collaboration between scientific and technological institutions and the board to revive the Museum of Science and Technology (MST) project.

Such a partnership, he said, would also help surmount the challenges facing the operations of the MST.

“Though the museum is operational, it faces challenges and limitations which we can overcome if all stakeholders in the science and technology industry pool resources,” he said.

Speaking at the maiden exhibition of the MST in Accra last Tuesday, Dr Oyortey said, “Pooling resources will ensure that there are adequate facilities at the museum for it to become more functional to attract the interest of Ghanaians in science and technology.”

The event was aimed at engaging the public for them to appreciate scientific concepts and adopt them as part of their socio-cultural lifestyle.

It attracted student exhibitors from the Accra and the Takoradi polytechnics, the Jubilee Technical Training Centre and the University of Ghana who exhibited items such as amplifiers, a hospital alarm system, indicators and mowers.

Partnership required

Dr Oyortey said the MST project had stalled for nearly 40 years, causing the facility to operate at low level.

To revive the project, he said, the management needed resource support from other institutions, particularly for the collection and exhibition of scientific and technological materials.

“As part of efforts to revive the museum, the management has redesigned a concept to achieve its thematic areas such as natural sciences, biological sciences, applied sciences and interactive communication technology,” he stated.

Science and Technology vital

In a speech read on her behalf, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, said she was optimistic that the Science and Technology exhibition would help boost the new Science, Technology and Innovations policy initiative by the government aimed at bridging the gap among science and technology, industry and society, as well as enhance socio–economic transformation.

She stated that scientific knowledge had been crucial in the transformation of many societies globally and pledged her ministry’s support to the MST.

For her part, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms Bernice Adiku Heloo, pledged to ensure that the MST was provided with the needed infrastructure to operate effectively.
