She explained that, although it was the government’s responsibility to provide education in the country, there was also the need for parents to make sure they provided the basic needs of their children so that they could go to school in peace to learn.

Madam Berchie made the statement in an address read for her at the maiden Speech and Fun Day for the Holy family Crèche at Ahinsan in Kumasi.

The pupils used the event to dress and display the country’s of rich culture.

The school, which started in September last year, with the enrolment of one child, now has a population of 42 children, aged between six months and four years.

It is located in a very serene environment, equipped with state-of-the-art learning equipment such as e-learning materials, internet facilities and other items, which enhance effective teaching and learning. According to the Department of Social Welfare, it is ranked as a grade “A” institution.

Maintain standards

Madam Berchie urged the management of schools to continue to comply with all regulations governing their operations to maintain standards. She gave a warning that the department was going to intensify its monitoring of schools in the region to ensure that all institutions complied with the laid down regulations. She added that any institution which failed to comply would be closed down.

The Proprietress of Holy Family Crèche, Dr Mrs Agatha Akua Bonney, said the decision to set up the school, was to provide a home-like setting for the child in the early days of training, which is characterised by violence, insecurity, intolerance and mistrust.

She said the children were taught basic virtues of life; namely, respect, love, tolerance, and trust in their formative years so that they would grow into responsible adulthood.

Dr Mrs Bonney, a medical doctor by profession, explained that the establishment of the school was to counsel parents to provide their children with good food, family-centred care and all-round security that constituted the backbone of sound physical and mental development.
