Each day student received GH¢300 a year, while boarders had GH¢615 per student a year.

The Akyem Oda Methodist Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Kwame Baffour-Kyei, deputised for the Presiding Bishop of the church, Most Rev. Titus K. Awutwi Pratt, to make the presentation at a grand ceremony at Oda.

He advised the beneficiary students to study hard and also lead morally upright lives in order to continue to enjoy the scholarships.

Commitment to education

Rt. Rev. Kwame Baffour-Kyei said the Methodist Church was committed to education development that was why it had established many educational institutions to supplement government’s efforts at providing quality education for Ghanaians.

He enjoined the government to abolish some of the numerous killer taxes which had brought economic hardships to Ghanaians and were collapsing industries so as to bring lasting relief to the people.

The Diocesan Bishop seized the opportunity to impress upon the Ghanaian youth not to allow themselves for politicians to use them to cause violence before, during and after the December 7, 2016 general election to undermine the prevailing peace and stability in the country.

He urged Ghanaians to vote according to their conscience and not to bow down to the monetary and material influence by politicians.

The National Chairman of the Children’s Ministry Directorate of the church, Madam Janet Nana Thompson, who gave a brief history of the scholarship scheme, said the scheme started in 2000 when Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante Antwi was the Presiding Bishop.

She said four students were selected from each diocese while Oda, the host diocese, was given six students, adding that SHS 2 and SHS 3 students were the beneficiaries.

Madam Thomspon said about 1,000 students had so far benefited from the scholarship scheme since its inception.

Beneficiaries

She said the scheme had helped many students to complete universities and other tertiary educational institutions adding that these graduates are working with banks, media houses, health, education, among other sectors.

The Lay Chairman of the Oda Methodist Diocese, Mr Johnson Yeboah Gyekye, advised the beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme not to abuse the privilege as they could be withdrawn and, in addition, block the chances of prospective beneficiary students.

The immediate past Municipal Chief Executive for Birim Central, Madam Ophelia Koomson, who chaired the function, advised the students to refrain from drug abuse, homosexuality and lesbianism as that could ruin their lives.
