Old students hand over two projects to alma mater

The 1973/75 year groups of the Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) Old Students Association (V and X+group) have handed over two projects to their alma mater.

The projects entail the remodelling of bathrooms and construction of a mechanised borehole water system with two storage tanks with a storage capacity of 20,000 litres for the St James and Matthew Houses at a cost of GH¢45,000.

The groups conceived the idea to undertake the projects during a visit to the school by some of the old students a year ago who spotted some non-functioning toilets and some broken shower heads.

This affected the students as they had to travel to other houses to queue to use the sanitation facilities, leading to late attendance of events and classes.

The President of the 1973/75 class, Katakyie Kwadwo Poku in an address read for him by Katakyie Kwaku Agyapong, Secretary for the group, said they decided to support the students due to the important role water played in the life of every human being.

Decision to contribute

He explained that upon hearing about the state of the facilities, they quickly communicated to their mates both home and abroad to contribute towards the project to bring relief to the students and management of the school as well.

The president said the handing over of the project was a sure way of complementing effort of the Catholic Church and the government towards the development and maintenance of the school.

He stated that following the successful completion of the projects for the two houses, it had also completed exploratory work for the St Luke, Mark and John Houses and would soon partner the Akatakyie in the United States of America to undertake some construction works there.

Katakyie Poku eulogised the headmaster and other governing members of the schools for their cooperation and support during the construction of the project and urged them to continue as many initiatives were in the pipeline.

The Headmaster of the School, Dr Alexis Nimoh-Frimpong, was full of praise to the various year groups of the school who kept coming back to support their alma mater.

Relief to students

He said the construction of the water system had brought great relief to students and the school in general since water shortage used to be one of the major challenges confronting the school and appealed to other old students, non-governmental organisations, well-meaning Ghanaians and other philanthropists to come to the aid of the school.

Dr Nimoh-Frimpong appealed for support towards the construction of a new Chapel for the school since the one they were using was constructed several decades ago and was too small to accommodate the entire student population.

The headmaster also appealed for support towards the completion of the school’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre project started some years ago but suspended due to lack of funds.

In attendance at the presentation of the projects were some members of the two year groups from both home and abroad.
