She explained that apart from supporting with the development of infrastructure, providing books and other items, the old students could also serve as great role models through interaction with the students and encourage them to take their studies seriously.

Mrs Osei-Manu was speaking at a handover ceremony of large quantity of books donated by some old students of the St Monica’s Senior High School to their alma  mater, at Asante-Mampong.

The President of the Ashanti Region branch of St Monica's Old Students Association (SMOSA), Mrs Comfort Asante of the 1978 group, presented the books on behalf of the USA branch of the SMOSA.

Earlier, the old students had donated large quantities of African writers’ series in addition to books on Mathematics, English, and Science, among other disciplines to the school.

Commendation

The headmistress commended the old students for their immense contribution towards the development of the school and their constant visitation to the school which, she said, motivated the girls to strive to be responsible citizens like the old students.

She explained that after some time various reading groups would be tested through debates on the books as part of measures to encourage the students to form the habit of reading.

For her part, Mrs Asante assured the staff and students that they would not relent in their efforts to contribute their quota to make teaching and learning comfortable for both the teacher and the student so that the school would continue to produce excellent students.

"We hope our girls will spend more time at the school's library and develop a passion for reading. We wish those enrolled in the Book Reading Club will utilise some of the books to prepare their book reports.  Our goal is to continue sending books to stock the shelves of the school's library,” she explained.

An old student, Mrs Akosua Fordwor, admonished the students not to be distracted or enthused by immoral activities, especially ungodly relationship with boys, but concentrate on their studies.

She said they should make good use of their time while in school, learn and avoid anti-social activities that would thwart their plans of becoming responsible citizens in future.
