He said the country would continue to experience huge literacy deficit which could delay it’s socio –economic development, if government does not focus attention on education in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.

According to Article 38(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the State shall provide educational facilities at all levels and in all regions of Ghana, and shall to the greatest extent feasible, make those facilities available to all citizens.

Mr Addo was speaking during a visit to some schools in the Northern region as part of his tour of the area.

Challenges

Commenting on some of the key challenges confronting education in the north, he mentioned inadequate qualified teachers, classroom blocks, lack of recreational centers, motivation and incentives for teachers.

Mr. Addo emphasised that equal opportunities must be created for all citizens in the country.

“We have to guarantee that the masses have sufficient knowledge and value skill acquisition, as well as technical abilities,” he added.

Interventions

Mr Addo mentioned social intervention schemes such as school feeding, free distribution of school uniforms and exercise books as useful for increasing school enrollments and retention of pupils in school

He further stressed that improving education would help children to become useful and responsible citizens in the country, and therefore called for more of such support.
