The foundation has made available a van for the mobile library in addition to the provision of more than 5,000 library books, procured with support from the American-based Ghana Hope Foundation.

The ceremony, which formed part of the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration, coincided with the presentation of awards to some basic school teachers who played a major role during the piloting of the mobile library.

Habit of reading

Speaking at the launch of the mobile library at New Abirem last Thursday, Mr Benjamin Owusu, the Deputy Birim North District Director of Education advised teachers to encourage their students to develop the habit of reading in order to improve their vocabulary.

He stressed that reading variety of books would also help the children to have an insight into other subjects aside from English.

According to him, USAID would soon organise reading festivals for 100 districts in the country of which Birim North would be a beneficiary. He, therefore, urged teachers and parents to patronise the festival to learn more about the essence of reading.

The Project Officer of Ntiamoah Foundation, Mr Yao Atidiga, said since its inception, the foundation had awarded 105 scholarships to students in senior high schools, colleges of education, polytechnics and nursing training colleges, some of whom had completed their education.

He said the foundation had also donated medical equipment and consumables to the New Abirem Government Hospital, constructed school blocks, provided dual desks and computers to a number of communities in the Birim North District, adding that it presented 10 raincoats and Wellington boots to 10 circuit officers in the district.

The Abiremhene, Nana Kwasi Amo Kyeretwie I, who launched the mobile library, commended the Ntiamoah Foundation for its commitment to the development of the district, especially in education and health promotion.

Related development

In a related development, the  Ntiamoah Foundation had performed a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a GH¢ 83,496 multi-purpose kindergarten (KG) block for the Akyem Ntronang Presbyterian basic school in the Birim North District in the Eastern Region.

The project comprises two classrooms, a crèche, restroom, store, office, forecourt, two toilets and two bath houses.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Birim North District Director of Education, Mr Benjamin Owusu, stressed the need for stakeholders in education to provide quality infrastructure for kindergartens to create a conducive atmosphere for teaching little children.

Mr Yao Atidiga said the construction of the multi-purpose KG block formed part of the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration, indicating that the foundation had supported the New Abirem Government Hospital and the St Michael Clinic at Ntronang with medical equipment and consumables since its inception in 2006.

He stated that the foundation had also renovated the Islamic Primary School block at Mamanso, as well as the Islamic Junior High School block at Akyem Afosu and provided the two educational institutions with 50 dual desks each.

The Chief of Ntronang, Nana Asiedu Akora II, who chaired the function, praised the Ntiamoah Foundation for the gesture and promised to take proper care of the facility when it was completed.
