The occasion was celebrated on the theme: "Investing in the Child today for a better tomorrow - the Role of the Church, Parent and the State”.

In an interview, a member of the Education Committee of the church, Mr Joseph Agyemang, said the fund was open to the public, irrespective of one’s religious affiliation.

He said the fund was established with the purpose of assisting families who had difficulty paying for their children’s education.

He said a legal framework that guided the disbursement of the fund was put into operation last year.

He said it was not automatic that all applicants would receive favourable response because before receiving support there would be investigations to determine if one merited assistance.

Mr Agyemang expressed his gratitude to Oheneba Kofi Owusu Piesie, a philanthropist and businessman, who is a member of the church for supporting the fund with GH¢10,000.00

Launching

There were a number of singing groups in attendance at the launch of the fund. They included groups such as New Era, Dominion Singers, Bremang Vision Singers, Testimony Singers and Precious One.

The Queen of Tanodumase, Nana Puah Yiadom II, was the chairperson for the occasion, while a former Vice Chancellor of the Valley View University (VVU), Prof. Daniel Buor, participated as the guest speaker.

Prof. Buor noted that education was one of the pillars on which socio-economic development was built.

He said the church must be commended for undertaking to financially support such brilliant, needy students irrespective of the religion they belonged to.

He was of the view that under no circumstance should financial difficulties impede the educational flow of a determined student.

He urged other religious organisations to also take up the charge of helping to get the youth of the country educated.

Prof. Buor entreated students who would benefit from the funding facility to study hard and make their families and the church proud.

Encroachment on school lands

The Kwabre East District Director of Education, Ms Akua Abrafi Ampofo, was not happy with the encroachment on school lands in the district.

She said the situation was affecting education in the district and that the Ghana Education Service (GES) was making efforts to deal with the situation head on.

She also commended the New Tafo SDA Church for initiating the fund. She said it would help reduce the burden on the government and make access to quality education easy for people in difficulty.
