The old two-storey building had been refurbished into a modern facility with interior and exterior works that include new book shelves and cabinets, landscaping, a carport, electrical re-wiring, and toilet facilities for visitors at the cost of GH¢495,000.

The library effectively combines books stocked on the shelves with electronic books that can easily be accessed with a click of a button, and is linked to more than 3,500 websites.

According to Mrs Cynthia Lumor, the Corporate Services Executive, since 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation had made investments in three critical areas of health, education and economic empowerment.

In the Western Region, she said the foundation had invested about GH¢1,175,075 to provide facilities such as the construction of a six-unit classroom block with an office and store and a 20-seater ICT centre at Ahantaman Senior School.

“We have also invested in the Sefwi Abono Community School and the refurbishment of the maternity unit of the Effia Nkwanta Hospital. In addition, we have provided medical supplies to the Wassa Dunkwa Health Centre and Shama District Hospital.

She said, “we are committed to this project because we believe access to library facilities is essential for both academic and social development,” adding that the library would brighten and empower young and old people in the region to have the perfect ambiance for reading and research.

For the students, she said, it offered a sanctuary for study, quiet reflection and served as a treasure house of knowledge, with well-defined structures, which gave users the opportunity to search for and locate relevant materials for continued learning.

She said MTN’s mission was to enrich the lives of customers, and that funding the project was a  clear demonstration of its absolute belief in that mission.
