‘Monitor use of Internet by children’

The Director General of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Ms Dorothy Gordon, has underscored the need for parents to monitor how their children use ICT, particularly the Internet.

While agreeing that ICT and the Internet had various advantages particularly in the area of education, she said it also had the potential for inculcating in children deviant behaviours.

Speaking at the fourth graduation and Speech and Prize-giving Day of the Delsi Kids World Montessori School in Accra, she said parents needed to guide their children as to which website to visit, and stressed that they could only do that effectively by having basic knowledge of the use of ICT.

Pupils in both the preschool and the primary sections who excelled in various subjects, were honoured while 21 nursery pupils graduated to the primary school.

Parental guidance

Ms Gordon said children would find ways to use the Internet with or without their parents’ permission and, therefore, parents must allow and guide children through the use of ICT and the Internet to prevent them from going astray, and also spend quality time with children in order to shape their attitudes.

Remark by proprietress

The proprietress of the school, Mrs Laurentia Daformekpor, applauded parents and staff of the school for working tirelessly for the school to achieve success, pointing out that all stakeholders, including government, parents and teachers must work hard to ensure a holistic education for children.

She said education should not focus solely on academic work but children must be encouraged to develop their talents to succeed in life.
