Library for Coaltar PRESEC

The Presbyterian Relief Service and Development (PRSD), a non-governmental organisation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, has inaugurated a modern library for the Coaltar Presbyterian Senior High School in the Ayensuano District in the Eastern Region.

The NGO refurbished an already existing building and provided furniture and assorted modern textbooks to stock the library.

The library facility is intended to enhance reading and learning among students in a school which is classified as deprived.

Inaugurating the facility, the Chief Executive Officer of the Presbyterian Relief Services and Development who is also the National Director of the Development and Social Services of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Daniel Edmund Kofi Asante, said the provision of the facility reflected its commitment to provide education and rescue children from slavery in Ghana.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Albert Mack Asare Tawiah, commended the PRSD and described its work as inspiring and motivating.

He called on the government, corporate bodies, past students and individuals to support the school.

Mr Tawiah said the school lacked  accommodation for students and teachers, dining hall, vehicle, among others.

He said over the years, the school had not seen any meaningful development, yet it had  operated as a high school in the area since 1993.

Mr Tawiah said because of lack of infrastructure, the headmaster’s bungalow was currently serving as a dormitory for about 200 female students. This situation had forced some parents to withdraw their children from the school.

He also disclosed that three classrooms had been transformed into dormitories for boys.

Mr  Tawiah added that the absence of a science laboratory had also been a major problem for the school which was elevated to a boarding status in 2013.

He, therefore, called on the education minister to expedite action on the school’s development since education was the bedrock of national development.

Mr Emmanuel Ankamah, National Co-ordinator of PRSD, said the organisation was registered as a non-profit agency through which the Presby Church promoted activities such as health, education, leadership in rural communities, disaster management and the empowerment of women and youth in achieving sustainable income.

He stated that such activities were geared towards contributing to Ghana’s efforts at achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
