The three-day programme, the eighth of its kind and organised by I-Texon Ghana, also brought together officials of the various tertiary institutions across the country to make information on higher education in the country available to prospective tertiary students and the general public.

A total of 14 universities and university colleges are participating in the fair.

They include the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), the Sunyani Polytechnic, Anglican University College, All Nations University College, Ghana Baptist University College, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana, Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, and the Methodist University College.

The rest are the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS), DAAD-German Academic Exchange Service, Regent University College, Garden City University College, Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana, KNUTSFORD University College and the Ghana Institute of Languages.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, Dr George Adjei Henne, noted that the country had for some time now enjoyed the reputation of having one of the best systems of education in sub-Saharan Africa.

However, he said there was much that still needed to be done, and that education was the basis for the development of a person’s values and also affected one’s outlook and goals in life.

Dr Henne, therefore, stressed that the right and relevant kind of education was crucial for national development.

“It is imperative that we leave no stone unturned in securing the best education for future generations to add to the natural resources we have in the country,” he said.

The Chief Executive officer of I-Texon Ghana, Captain (Mrs) Catherine Haizel, in an address read on her behalf, said in the last two decades, the country had seen an explosion in the education sector with the springing up of many institutions.

Accredited university colleges

She said with over 51 accredited university colleges currently in operation in the country, Ghana’s tertiary education had seen tremendous growth since the liberalisation of that sector, stressing that global higher education market was worth $43.06 billion and was forecast to grow to $65.83 billion in 2019.

Capt Mrs Haizel said I-Texon Ghana had been at the forefront of helping the country to build the relevant capacity “to put us ahead in the race and we believe the effort at helping our institutions to grow in anticipation of the predicted youth boom should start at home.”

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Professor Mrs Esi Awuah, stressed the need for the establishment of community universities to make university education accessible to everyone.
