Assembly institutes free extra classes

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly (GCMA) has instituted a free extra classes policy for final year students who will be writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year and beyond.

Under the policy, final year students will be required to either wait after school or be in school early in the morning for extra tuition by the teachers.

This is part of efforts by the assembly to improve the performance of students who sit for the BECE annually.

Briefing the Daily Graphic at the presentation of a three-year Medium Term Development Plan (MTDP) for the assembly in Accra, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Aristo Aryee, said the development of education was a major area the assembly would focus on.

The MTDP, he said, was linked to the National Development Plan (NDP), adding that, “The municipality will channel enough resources to all sectors, particularly  the educational sector for their total transformation.”

Collaboration

Mr Aryee explained that the Municipal Educational Oversight Committee (MEOC) of the Municipal Educational Unit was collaborating with the assembly to implement the policy.

According to him, a recent study conducted by the committee indicated that students in the private schools usually performed better than those in the public institutions, due to proper supervision in those institutions and reward for excellence.

“It is for this reason that as an assembly we have decided to hold extra classes for final year students as one of the ways to improve students’ performance. Teachers have also been encouraged to do their best as the assembly will give them honorarium for the extra classes,” he added.

Improved facilities

The MCE indicated that the assembly had also begun with the construction of additional modern infrastructural facilities for basic schools in the municipality to enable every child of school age to attend school, and also abolish the shift system.

On health, he stated that a municipal hospital would be constructed soon for easy access to health care.

He also touched on the disability fund for the municipality, saying persons with disability would be empowered by creating jobs for them using portions of the fund “rather than giving it to them as stipends.”

Other areas that will receive attention from the assembly include water and sanitation, roads, unemployment, spatial development and planning.
