Inaugurating the Parkuso Community Day Senior High School (SHS ) in the Asokore Mampong District in the Ashanti Region yesterday, the President said many West African families were turning to Ghana in search of quality education.

He said it was, therefore, unfortunate that for political reasons, some Ghanaians were running down the country's educational system.

"We must not be quick to denigrate our nation for political gains," he urged.

Parkuso is a peri-urban community which had long been neglected in socio-economic infrastructure. However, under the current government, the community has enjoyed appreciable development.

The Parkusohene, Nana Boakye Amponsah Okofroban, encapsulated the challenges the community faced in the past when he said at the ceremony that: "But for President Mahama, we thought Ghana had rejected us."

The Parkuso Community Day SHS is the 16th of the President's flagship education project to be inaugurated.

Of the 123 of the schools that were awarded on contract, 13 are in the Ashanti Region. Out of this number, five have been completed.

Media must research

President Mahama said people were allowed to make false comments that the education system had taken a nosedive, when in reality, the reverse was the case.

He made references to recent results of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as a testament to the rise in the quality of education.

On that score, the President urged the media to research into the standards of education so that people would not have the leeway to put out wrong information about Ghana's education.

On access, President Mahama said the Community Day SHS had added up to the progress made.

He said 42 of the schools  had offered placements to some 45,360 students, many of whom would have been denied SHS education due to the lack of access.

President Mahama called on students to accept placements in the schools since they had all the facilities that could be found in any of the endowed schools.

Parkusohene grateful

The Parkusohene commended the President for all that the government had done for the community.

"Today, because of the work your government has done here, Parkoso is a household name," he said.
