Refrain from sexual activities, stick to books, Headmaster tells students

The Headmaster of Zabzugu Senior High School (ZABSEC) in the Zabzugu District in the Northern Region, Mr Osman Halidu Macarious, has admonished the students, especially the females   to “marry their books” and refrain from sexual activities.

He said  apart from the fact that such development could lead to pregnancy that would affect their academic life, it could also lead to contraction of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Speaking at the school’s first Speech and Prize-giving Day and the 25th anniversary of the school, Mr Macarious expressed worry about the case involving nine female students of the school who became pregnant in the 2015/2016 academic year adding that none of the nine pregnant students returned to the school to continue their academic work after giving birth.

Appeal for support

He also appealed to the government and philanthropic organisations to assist the school to fence its compound in order to prevent students, particularly the females, from sneaking out of the school, pointing out that the open nature of the school exposed its students to many dangers including students sneaking to town at odd hours.

He further appealed to the parents-teacher association (PTA) to help the school in the construction of the fence.

Mr Macarious also expressed concern over the lack of infrastructural facilities in the school, such as classrooms, accommodation for both students and teachers, and a dining hall.

According to him, more than 90 per cent of the school’s staff lived outside the school’s premises  thus making it difficult for effective supervision of the students in the school.

The Zabzugu SHS was established on January 28, 1991 with a total of 83 students, and now boasts 2,400 students.

Achieving goals

In his address, the Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Alhaji Mohammed Haroon, also implored the students to be disciplined, stressing that it was only through discipline that they (students) would be able to achieve their goals in life.

He said the regional education directorate had received a total of 100 beds, 2000 mattresses, 3,000 teachers’ tables and chairs, 5000 mono desks, and 5000 dual desks for distribution to all SHSs in the region.

He added that the directorate had also received a total of 47,000 note books to be distributed to schools in the region.

The first Headmaster of the school, Alhaji Abdulai Mohammed, was honoured with a 32-inch plasma television set for his dedicated service to the school.
