‘Don’t rely on men for financial support’

The Agona East District Senior High School (SHS) Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service (GES),Mrs Susanna Ofosu-Eck, has advised young girls against falling on young men for financial support if their parents are unable to provide them with their basic needs.

According to her, if their parents were not in a position to provide all their needs as a result of poverty it should not compel them to rely on men to provide such needs since such men might take advantage of them sexually.

She stated that there were instances where young girls had fallen prey to unscrupulous men who had carnal knowledge of them leading to unwanted pregnancies.

“Let me tell you, in this world, there is no free lunch anywhere so be careful about such favours from men,” she told the scholarship beneficiaries of the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), while addressing young girls during the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child at Agona Nsaba in the Central Region.

Celebration

It was held on the theme: ‘Leveraging resources for girls education and young women transition: An agenda for 2030, and it was organised by CAMFED Alumini (CAMA) with support from the Agona East District Education Committee.

CAMA Alumini is an association of young women sponsored by CAMFED who have successfully completed their SHS education.

The ceremony was preceded by a procession with placards through the principal streets of the town.

Some inscriptions on the placards read “strong girls, strong world”, “education transforms girls,” lives and societies’, “little girls with dreams become women with vision”, “save the girl-child, think of a world without us”, “educate a girl and she will change the world”.

Right decisions

Ms Elikplim Abusah, the Core Trainer of Agona East CAMFED, touching on the theme, said CAMFED had over the years supported girls to acquire education at both the senior high and tertiary levels in the Central and the three northern regions of Ghana.

The Queenmother of the Agona Nsaba Traditional Area, Nana Adwoa Nkansah Aduam III said the future could only be better for them if they made the right decisions and choices during their teenage period.

She urged them to take their studies seriously since it was the single most important legacy that their parents could bequeath to them.

The Nkosuohemaa of Agona Nsaba, Nana Akua Otosi Dansowah I, for her part encouraged the young girls to see education as the only vehicle that can change their lives for the better.
