‘Demystify study of science, technology’

The President of the Radford University College (RUC), Dr Paul Effah, says the study of science and technology should be demystified at the very early stages of children’s development.

Schools and colleges, he said, should provide the environment and opportunities that made the study of science and technology interesting, easy and enjoyable.

“The study of science and technology should be supported by appropriate government policy and facilities such as laboratories and good science museums appropriately equipped and resourced,” he said, adding that “these should be complemented by scholarships within the reach of students”. Dr Effah said this at the third congregation and seventh matriculation of the Radford University College in Accra last Saturday.

Programmes in the RUC

At the event, 136 students who pursued various programmes, including Fashion and Graphic Design, graduated while 187 fresh students were formally admitted to the university.

Of the graduands, 21, representing 16 per cent, had first class; 71, representing 52 per cent, had second class upper while 44 of them, representing 32 per cent, had second class lower.

Dr Effah reminded the graduands that many successful organisations looked for character before credentials and attitude before aptitude.

Mount science and technology programes

The Chairman of the RUC, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, called on private tertiary institutions to mount science and technology programmes since that was a constitutional requirement.

“This call is legitimate because the emphasis on science and technology is a constitutional requirement.”

“It is important for the private tertiary institutions to be supported in this regard. Some funding should be provided to support collaboration between private and public universities training in science and technology programmes,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. William Otoo Ellis, congratulated the university college on its progress over the years.

The Managing Director of Ecobank, Mr Samuel Ashietey Adjei, urged the graduates to strive for excellence as they went into the world of work.
