Complementary Basic Education classes begins in Northern Region

Over 1,700 children out of school have started Complementary Basic Education (CBE) classes in Gushegu, Karaga and West Gonja District in the Northern Region.
There are 24 CBE classes in Gushegu, 24 in Karaga and 20 in the West Gonja Districts, totaling 68 communities of the three districts.
The CBE is a nine month cycle of literacy and numeracy in the mother tongue and the children enrolled into Gushegu CBE classes will learn Likpakpaal, children in Karaga will learn Dagbanli and Children in West Gonja will learn the Gonja language.
Mr Ernest Nniakyire, the Monitoring and Valuation Officer of Complementary Basic Education for Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT), announced this during the opening of one of the CBE classes at Zamashegu in the Gushegu District of Northern Region.
He said GILLBT, School for Life, World Education, AFRIKIDs, IBIS among others are implementing partners of the UKaids funded project which is targeting 20,000 children out of school to educate and prepare them for formal education in the next academic year.
Mr Nniakyire said facilitators for the project are being trained and each class will comprise of 13 girls and 12 boys between the ages of 8-14 years.
Mr Samuel Anwar, the Gushegu District Director of Education, appealed to GILLBT and its partners to enroll more of the girls to join the classes and assured them that GES will work with them to ensure the success of the project.
Mr Jawol Bisunna Titus, Gushegu District Coordinator of CBE, said out of 30 Konkomba communities in the District only seven Konkomba communities have formal basic schools representing 23 percent.
He said GES has made available classrooms and other logistics for the project adding that parents will be represented on the CBE committee to monitor the teachers and the activities of their children.
