“We promise that in the coming years you would see a different Central University with much higher standards,” he said.

Prof. Yankah said this at the maiden graduation of 22 students who undertook a one-year certificate course in law.

Quality

He said one of the means by which “we think we can leverage on the quality of knowledge that we impart to our students is to extend our services to the world of work, to ensure that it is not only those within the walls of our university that benefit from the rich human resource base that we have but moving beyond the walls by taking the gown to town”.

He said the university was happy to institute the Business Development Centre to administer such programme to fit the work schedule of workers.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Central University, Prof. Ken Attafuah, said the students had acquired knowledge in a particular field of endeavour and that “this knowledge is expected to aid you in the enterprise of leading where you are,”.

By virtue of what they had studied, he said they would be able to make better decisions because they had acquired a broader and wider appreciation of the socio-legal implications of what they were engaged in.

Justice

About administrative injustice, he said, it was one of the most serious problems in the country, and that it was a perennial concern.

Prof. Attafuah said practically on a daily basis “we see the living adverse impact of administrative injustices in the country, and it is my expectation that the few thoughts I share with you would encourage you to be mindful of the importance of administrative justice in this country”.

He said although they were not lawyers yet, the expectations were that they had a good flavour of law at the point they were graduating which should manifest in their lives.
Law

The Director of the Business Centre, Mr Yaw Sarpong, said the law certificate programme was designed with the intention of equipping persons of varied professional backgrounds to have a working knowledge of the law and to apply the knowledge in their areas of operation.

The first batch of beneficiaries, he said, were university lecturers, marketers, bankers, accountants, teachers and entrepreneurs, and that they were taken through courses such as contract law, criminal law, Ghana Legal System, constitutional law, land law, equity, alternative dispute resolution and succession law.
