Be wary of exam results fraudsters : WAEC cautions public

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has called on university applicants to be wary of fraudsters claiming to be staff of the council who have the capacity to alter and better their results.

According to the council, the fraudsters who claim to have access to the council’s database, contact senior high school graduates with the promise of bettering their results for fees ranging between GHC 600 and GHC 700.

Security features

The Head of Public Affairs of (WAEC), Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, explained to the Daily Graphic that there was no way such people could alter the results of candidates since it was not possible to do so due to security features that were hidden.

She said the council dealt directly with the universities and other tertiary institutions, and so any results altered would be easily detected by the institution a prospective student was applying to.

The council, she said, had since reported the activities of the fraudsters to the police after it got wind of them.

Accomplices

“Members of the public who have been defrauded are accomplices themselves because they only report the matter after they have been swindled. You make yourself available for someone to exploit you because if you get a text message that says come and I will change your results for you at a fee and you go ahead and pay, I mean you are part of the problem,” she said.

Mrs Teye-Cudjoe said the council had been inundated with calls from some members of the public saying people were going round claiming to be working in the WAEC Strong Room and could better their results for a fee.

Integrity

She said the council’s investigations had shown that staff of WAEC were not involved in the practice, and assured the public that ample security had been put in place to protect the integrity of results on the council’s database.
