They were each presented with items ranging from flat screen television sets, wax prints and gas cookers.

at the ceremony, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Mrs Felicia Boakye Yiadom, advised teachers in the municipality not to concern themselves with the organisation of extra classes for schoolchildren when they had not exhausted topics in their terminal syllabus during normal class hours.

“It would be a disservice on your part to withhold knowledge from pupils because you consider your monthly salaries to be inadequate and therefore see the need to complement your finances by organising extra classes and charging unapproved fees,” she added.

She also expressed regrets that some teachers had resorted to the use of instructional hours for personal business ventures and warned of punitive measures for teachers caught in such acts.

Illicit affairs

The regional director also expressed worry at the conduct of some male teachers, alleged to be having illicit affairs with pupils, warning that such actions did not only bring the name of the profession into disrepute, but also went to abruptly end the education of many young girls who often ended up being impregnated by male teachers engaged in such misconducts.

Absenteeism

Mrs Boakye-Yiadom also expressed concern about absenteeism, lateness and the lack of preparetion by teachers for their lessons and described such acts as unacceptable conducts that deprived pupils of the opportunity to finish their syllabus before examination.

She advised circuit supervisors to be up to the task and ensure that reports on those found to be engaged in teacher absenteeism and general misconduct were presented to the regional directorate for appropriate action.

The Greater Accra Regional representative of the Council of State, Mr Emmanuel Adzei Anang, urged teachers to endeavour to put in their best, adding, “Helping children to become responsible citizens in itself is a reward.”

MCE

The Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Ibrahim Baidoo, for his part, encouraged teachers in the municipality to be dedicated to duty, and emphasised the need for them to train pupils to be respectful.

The Resident Pastor of the Resurrection Temple of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Reverend Dr Michael

Perry Tettey, who delivered the keynote address, also admonished pupils to be disciplined and self-motivated and adopt best societal practices to become responsible adults.
