The recipients are made up of six boys and five girls. Already 31 students are benefiting from the scheme. The award covers their school fees and other educational needs.

As a measure to ensure that the students excel in their academic activities, the 11 beneficiaries were made to sign a bond to perform excellently in their examination. Anything contrary to that would lead to the withdrawal of the scholarship.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Awomefia of the Anlo state, Togbui Sri III, who is the life patron of the fund, observed that education was the best legacy to give to the younger generation and that he was enthused the fund had come to support needy brilliant children in the area.

Education legacy

“In the past, cocoa, timber and cash crops used to be the legacy people left for their children but in this present day, education is the only legacy that can sustain our younger ones and make them better people in the society,” he stated.

Togbui Sri encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity given them and desist from deviant behaviour while in school.

The Awomefia thanked the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Sylvester Tornyeavah, the brain behind the setting up of the fund, for the foresight, and promised to support it to make positive impact on the citizenry.

Contributions from well-wishers

The Chairman of the board of trustee of the fund, Professor Victor Patrick Yao Gadzekpo, mentioned that the funds for the scholarship were raised from contributions from well-wishers, pointing out that priority was given to girls to encourage them to go to school and divert their attention from going into shallot cultivation.

Out of 57 students who have been assisted since the programme started four years ago, 25 of them are girls.

Lack of funding

Last year, he said 25 students received the scholarship but the number this year had dropped because of lack of funds, pointing out that the trustees spent GH¢45,813 on the beneficiaries last year.

According to him, a good number of the students performed well in the  West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and have obtained admissions to the various universities.

Professor Gadzekpo, who said it was their desire to sponsor the university education as well, appealed to philanthropists and natives of Anlo in Ghana and abroad to support the fund.

The Keta Municipal Director of Education, Mr Raphael Kwashie, commended the beneficiaries for working hard to justify the confidence reposed in them and called on parents and guardians to support their wards or children not only in monetary terms, but with words of encouragement to help them remain  focused.
