Likpe Traditional Area discusses falling standards of education

The chiefs and people of the Likpe Traditional Area in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region have held a durbar at Likpe-Bala, to review the performance of pupils in basic educational institutions.

The durbar was attended by chiefs and queen mothers, teachers, parents, school management committees and relevant stakeholders drawn from all the 10 communities in the area with the view to finding solutions to causes of the gradual decline of educational standards in the area, once considered as the citadel of education in the Volta Region.

Lekoryi festival projects

Professor A.A Aboagye, Chairman of the Lekoryi Festival Planning Committee, recalled that the Paramount Chief of the Likpe Traditional Area, Otekple Soglo Alloh IV, had expressed concern about the falling standards of education in the area, and devoted the 2012 edition of the local festival to investigate the problem.

Professor Aboagye, who is a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, said a project dubbed, “Education-Going Back to the Basics” was instituted to discuss the problem and come up with measures to improve on the falling standards of education in the area.

Brainstorming session

A brainstorming session by the chiefs and people of the area to discuss the problem revealed that some of the causes of the problems were pupils disrespecting authority, lack of school equipment, lack of private time table for pupils for studies at home, night errands undertaken by pupils, child labour, amorous affairs by pupils, total parental neglect without supervision and poor staffing of teachers, among others.

Ownership of schools

In a statement, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Mr Nicholas Kutor, told the gathering that the management of schools was a collaborative effort among school authorities, the community and parents, and called for regular organisation of school performance appraisal meetings and regular supervision of pupils and teachers.

Mr Kutor said majority of the pupils performed far below average in a follow-up test programme in English dictation and Mathematics conducted to establish the level of academic performance of the pupils.

School Feeding Programme

In a welcome address, the Nifahene of Likpe and the chief of Likpe-Bala, Nana Osai Bulley VII, called for the introduction of the School Feeding Programme and the provision of school uniforms for pupils in the area.
