The move forms part of efforts by a renowned Human Rights Lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu who lives within the Madina Municiaplity, to help sustain the interest of the pupils in education.

The outreach is being done under the auspices of the Centre For Poverty Alleviation with support from Value For Life founded by the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Abla Gomashie.

Lawyer Sosu has been undertaking the Vacation Community Outreach since 2011.

He told the Daily Graphic that this year’s outreach will focus on teaching of Mathematics, English and Science.

Lawyer Sosu said that Value For Life will engage the participants in Culture and Creative Arts activities once a week at no cost.

Motivation
He said his motivation for the outreach stemmed out of his personal experience, growing up as a poor and deprived child.

According to him, there were a good number of pupils who were very brilliant but for lack finances and other resources, were unable to come to the fullest realization of their potential.

“My goal, is to give my little support to these children in the hope that they can grow to become what they were meant to be in this life and for them to make meaningful contribution to national development,” he said.

Children from Primary One to JHS 2 will benefit in 12 different schools in Oyarifa, Teiman, Pantang, Adenta West and Nkwantanan. The schools in Nkwantanan will host all interested pupils from the Zongo and Social Welfare areas as well.
When the Daily Graphic visited some of the schools in the municipality, the children were happy and showed so much enthusiasm about the free classes.

A class six pupil at Oyarifa, Rafiatu, told this reporter that this was the first time she had had the chance of attending vacation classes.

“Anytime one was held and I told my mother, she always said she didn’t have money and so I should come and assist her to sell to raise money for my school fees. But this time when I told her that lawyer Sosu was organizing the classes free of charge, she asked me to go,” she said.

Mr Sosu said the special outreach had been approved and supported by the Municipal Directorate of Education and the Girl Child Unit.
He expressed gratitude to the various headteachers and volunteer teachers who had made the classes possible.
