BECE now starts in early June

The annual Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for all final-year junior high school (JHS) students will now be written in the first week of June.

The examination, which has over the past four years been written around the middle of June, would as from next year take place earlier than usual.

According to the 2016-2017 academic calendar released by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for basic schools, the BECE would be written from Monday, June 5 to Friday, June 9, 2017.

When the exam was shifted from April to June in 2013, it was written from June 17 to 24. The second edition of the June examination was written from June 16-20, 2014 while the 2015 examination was held on June 15 until 19. 

It was also in February 2015 that the first BECE resit for private candidates began. 

This year, the examination was written from June 13-17, 2016. 

According to the GES academic calendar, basic schools were expected to re-open on September 13, 2016 for the first term of the 2016-2017 academic year with the commemoration of ‘My First Day at School’ in all schools. 

The first term would end on December 15, 2016 meaning pupils would spend 14 weeks in school. They would commence the Christmas break from December 16, 2016 until January 9, 2017.

The second term, according to the calendar, would begin on January 10, 2017 and end on April 13, 2017 for the Easter break from April 14, 2017 to May 8, 2017.  

The third term would start on May 9, 2017 and end on July 27, 2017 with the holidays commencing on July 28, 2017 to September 11, 2017, it added.

Senior high schools

For senior high schools, the 2016-2017 academic year would begin from September 8, 2014 to December 20, 2016 (16 weeks) for the first term, with the Christmas holidays commencing on December 21, 2016 to January 4, 2017.

The calendar indicated that the second term would start from January 5, 2017 to April 12, 2017, with students going on holidays on April 13 to May 3, 2017.

The third and final term would be from May 4, 2017 to July 21, 2017 with the holidays starting from July 22 to September 10, 2017.

The 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be held between February and June 2017.
