He said that was necessary to motivate them to attend school regularly, and pointed out that the treatment meted out to pupils by some teachers often scared them from attending school regularly, which in turn led to high pupil absenteeism in most public schools.

Alhaji Cambodia gave the advice when he visited some selected schools in the Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region as part of activities to mark this year's "My first day at school."

The day, which is observed on the first day of the new academic year of basic schools, was instituted by the Ministry of Education to arouse the interest of pupils and encourage them to stay in school.

The day is also marked to encourage children of school age, who are not in school to attend school to increase enrolment at the basic level.

Schools visited

The schools that were visited during the tour included Kanvilli R/C, Kanvili Presby, Jisonayili Baidul M/A, and Zamamia primary schools.

He expressed worry that most pupils dropped out of school as a result of the bad treatment meted out to them by their teachers.

He, however, advised the pupils to focus on their academic work to enable them to become responsible adults in the future, and added that it was only through discipline that they could achieve their dreams in life.

Alhaji Cambodia, who was accompanied by some officers of the Sagnarigu Educational Directorate, as well as some officials from the regional educational directorate, including the Northern Regional GES Public Relations Officer, Mr Donald Kanzoni Awaala, distributed some learning materials to the pupils in the schools they visited.

The team also inspected a newly constructed three-unit classroom block at the Jisonayili Baidul D /A Junior High School.

The Headmistress of the Kanvilli Presby Primary School, Madam Adelaide Achulo, expressed her gratitude to the team for visiting her school.
